Definition

Employee motivation is defined as the enthusiasm, energy level, commitment and the amount of creativity that an employee brings to the organization on a daily basis. (QuestionPro, 2022)

The word “motivation” comes from Latin word “movere”, which literally means "movement."

Motivated employees’ high valuable asset to any organization, they are directly proportional to the success of an organization. Motivation is intangible, difficult to measure, and extremely difficult to control, but if done properly, it is very easy to enhance. It all comes down to intent, intensity, and perseverance.

Type of employee motivation

There are two types of motivation

1. Intrinsic motivation - Intrinsic motivation means an individual's motivation coming from within. He or she wants to do well at work because the results are consistent with his or her belief system. The most powerful motivators are usually an individual's deeply held beliefs. Such individuals show common qualities like acceptance, curiosity, honor, desire to achieve success.

 2Extrinsic motivation – Extrinsic motivation means an individual’s motivation that is promoted by external factors such as rewards and recognition. Some people may never be internally motivated, and only external motivation would be completed their duties. Rewards like bonuses, salary increments, awards, etc.,

An organization must recognize that its employees are not clones, but rather individuals with unique characteristics. Thus, effectively motivating your employees will necessitate a deeper understanding of the various types and methods of motivation.

With this understanding, you will be able to better categorize your employees and apply the appropriate type of motivation to increase employee engagement and satisfaction. Some employees are more responsive to intrinsic motivation, while others may be more responsive to extrinsic motivation.

Motivated employees don’t need to be told how to get things done, they take initiatives, are keen to take up additional responsibilities and innovative.
